The Essentials of Cyber Essentials Workshop

Marketing Team

This session highlighted the threats posed especially to SME businesses by Cyber-attacks, and proposed Network Members consider gaining the Cyber Essentials certification as a practical way of protecting their’ businesses.

Cyber Essentials (CE for short) is a government backed initiative to improve businesses’ cyber defences, setting out practical security standards to adopt, which can then be objectively assessed by authorised bodies, leading to official certification under the scheme which must be renewed annually.

Tom Gill outlined the parameters of the scheme and provided information on how to prepare for and achieve this certification, the costs and benefits of doing so, and how Willis Towers Watson Networks could provide practical help.

He explained how Cyber Essentials addresses five key security areas to control and to prevent 80% of potential attacks and explained each one of these in more detail:

  • Boundary firewalls and internet gateways
  • Secure configuration
  • Access control
  • Malware protection
  • Patch management

Tom then briefly outlined the resource of supporting documents we have put together on e-Network (click here to view - if you require an E-Network login, please contact: Natasha.toft@willistowerswatson.com) to help Network Members with this initiative, with the aim of getting all Network Members’ business certified in the next 12 months.

As Cyber security remains an important subject for all businesses, this will be the major theme of the forthcoming Autumn Assembly meetings.
